Its origins

The project for a Science and Technology Park in Venice was planned at the beginning of the 1990’s, with the primary mission of redeveloping one portion of the first industrial area of Porto Marghera by applying a new environmentally sustainable development model.

The European Union classified this area as “Objective 2 – depressed industrial area”.

The VEGA Park now stands as one of the examples of the conversion of Porto Marghera.

The targets

  • To develop activities that are linked to innovation-generating Centres
  • To transfer technologies into production processes with the support of international expertise, in order to promote the entrepreneurial model of the Veneto region
  • To employ intellectual workforce and to create new jobs in the allied activities in the secondary and in the service sectors.

The idea to create a Science and Technology Park in the industrial site of Porto Marghera dates back to the beginning of the 1990’s, a period characterised by deep industrial transformations brought about by the crisis of the heavy industry, hence the need to redevelop the area and adapt it to a different production model based on a new, modern idea of industrial development and of services with the firm support of Universities and Research Centres.
The feasibility study, produced in 1993 by Consorzio Venezia Ricerche within the framework of the “SPRINT” project falling under EU DG12, and with the support of EU experts and of various economic and social players on the Venetian scene, identified manifold benefits for the territory.
When the European Union decided to list this area in its “Objective 2”, which meant the allocation of public funds (the FERS European structural funds, allocated and managed by the government of the Veneto region) to support a total investment of roughly 70 million Euro, the first three stages of the project were implemented to make the Science and Technology Park an example of the redevelopment of a portion of the industrial site of Porto Marghera.
